G4S 1st and TQ at Spanish EFRA GP

The ARCA track in Madrid
This weekends EFRA Spanish GP, being held at the ARCA track in Madrid, has been heavily disrupted by rain and low temperatures. The event, which was being treated as a warm up race for this summers European 1/10th 200mm Championships, is being attended by most of the top teams in Europe with some very serious competition entered. Despite the wet weather and 8 degree temperatures today, qualifying was run and it was topped by local driver Victor Pelaez driving a Team Magic G4S,2nd position going to Serpent racer Rafael Ortiz with Swedish NT1 racer Niklas Hakansson in 3rd, reigning Spanish 1/8th scale champion and Serpent SDD driver Oscar Cabezas ended the day 4th.

TQ - Victor Pelaez and Champion - Darren Johnson
Today saw the finals run at the Spanish EFRA GP in Madrid, where the weather was playing a factor all weekend, with cold temperatures and rain causing distruptions to all racers and todays weather was not much better, with rain dispersed by sunny spells. With so many drivers far down the order after qualifiying there was a lot of action in the lower finals with Carlos Peracho, Teemu Leino and Darren Johnson, some of the drivers making their way up into the A-final from lower qualifying spots. The 45 minute main final was disrupted once more by rain showers, which made tire choice vital, and the one who got it right was eventual winner Darren Johnson, racing a Team Magic G4S, who won ahead of 2nd placed Xray driver Teemu Leino of Finland by 5 laps with 2nd placed qualifier Rafael Ortiz eventually claiming the final podium spot in 3rd, one lap down on Leino.

Darren Johnson's little diary 2007/04/13  Browser : 302
2007 April in MADRID EFRA GP

My first race in Spain was to be the GP in practise for the Euros later in August, looking at the weather reports before we left we took out all our summer clothes and put the winter ones in !

On arriving we went to a damp track, but it looked to be drying so we would try to learn the track at a quiet time. First impressions were good, and the track has kerbs that you can actually use! Not ones that would throw you 6 foot in the air or cause a roll.

Everyone is busy in setting up the car

By the end of Wednesday my car was very safe (which is unusual, to start with) but I did not know the grip levels, so we waited to see what would happen. Thursday was dry too, so lots of practise, and I still had a very safe car, so we had to find some steering, Alex (my pitman) took some rear toe off and the car was now good, I just needed to stop crashing ! I was running the K-Factory tyres that I had used at the first national, and they worked very well in the high grip.

The champion tyres -- K-factory tyres

For Friday morning we had more dry running, and put in some good runs, but unfortunately it rained later on, in time for the controlled practise. The unpredictable weather continued for the rest of the weekend, which was a real shame as when dry the track had very good grip. We qualified in 7th, which put us in the semi final, when we got to the track on Sunday we were pleased with this as the track was damp and very tricky.

By the time of the Semis it was foam tyres, with just a little damp patch to make it interesting ! My car was good in the warm up, but I hit the barrier going onto the main straight and it wasnt quite the same after that !!

After a tough Semi, we managed to go through to the Main final, But then it rains a lot (almost like Heemstede EC) so time to prepare for the wet ! Although I seem to do well in the wet, I would have liked to race a dry final to show that the car was good, but if its wet, we race ! At the start in the real wet my car was good, and we managed to pull out a good gap, then just keep going to the finish……

Winner, Darren Johnson, with his super G4S

Champion Darren Johnson and Victor Pelaez who got 8th position

I would like to thank everyone at TecroTec, for all their support at the event, especially Rosario, Carlos and Victor, and my pitman Alex Gardiner for making it the best and most fun meeting I have attended.
